Fissure Sealants
Preventative treatment in the form of Fissure Sealants, coating of the grooves in permanent molars with a plastic coating, is often done when the first permanent molars appear. This is around of the ages of 6 or 7, but will vary depending on the child.
These sealants are painless and protect the tooth from decay. A coat of sealant is applied to a clean tooth. In some cases fissure sealants can be applied to ‘baby’ teeth, especially if early signs of decay may be apparent. They can also be used to preserve healthy teeth in older children and teenagers.
